Discover London Through Your Camera

Join us for a practical two-hour photography workshop exploring some of London’s most impressive architecture, taking you from the modern financial district of the City to the historic heart of Westminster.

Rather than spending two hours in a classroom, this is a hands-on photography experience. You will learn how to see buildings differently, understand composition and perspective, and put photographic techniques into practice as we move through some of London’s most varied architectural environments.

The workshop is suitable for complete beginners upwards. You do not need extensive photographic knowledge or experience – just a decent camera or smartphone and an enthusiasm for photography.

  • Perspective
  • Leading lines
  • Symmetry and balance
  • Photographing tall buildings
  • Controlling converging verticals
  • Using different viewpoints
  • Reflections
  • Architectural details
  • Using people to provide scale
  • Working with natural light
  • Basic camera settings
  • Choosing focal lengths
  • Creating stronger photographs rather than simply recording what is in front of you

Who Is the Workshop For?

Complete Beginners

If you have recently bought a camera and aren’t sure what all the buttons and settings do, this workshop will give you a practical introduction.

Smartphone Photographers

You don’t need a DSLR or mirrorless camera. The principles of composition, perspective, viewpoint and light apply equally to smartphone photography.

Amateur Photographers

If you already understand the basics of photography, the workshop gives you an opportunity to concentrate specifically on architectural photography and composition.

More Experienced Photographers

The changing London environment provides opportunities to experiment with perspective, unusual viewpoints, reflections, symmetry and creative architectural compositions.

What to Bring

Participants should bring:

  • A camera, DSLR, mirrorless or compact camera
  • Or a smartphone with a camera
  • Fully charged batteries
  • Memory card with sufficient space
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Weather-appropriate clothing
  • A small bottle of water

A tripod is not necessary for this two-hour workshop.

The City to Westminster

This workshop is designed to be more than a sightseeing tour and more than a traditional photography lesson.

Over two hours, participants will travel through several distinctly different areas of London and learn how to approach each one photographically.

Modern City architecture β†’ historic London β†’ Trafalgar Square β†’ Westminster

The emphasis throughout is on seeing, experimenting and taking photographs.

By the end of the session, participants won’t simply have photographed some of London’s famous buildingsβ€”they will have learned a practical approach to photographing architecture that they can take with them wherever they go.
