TBryanPhotography 2026 – London Architecture Photography 03

London After the Basics – Advanced City & Street Architecture Photography

2 hours | Saturday | 11:00am–1:00pm
Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Suggested starting point: London Bridge
Finish: Westminster / South Bank

London’s bridges, riverfront architecture and contrasting City/Westminster skyline provide an unusually rich environment for this level of workshop. London’s established photography courses also use the Thames and bridges for intermediate architectural work, including lens selection, light direction, depth of field and manual camera control.

The concept

The class should assume that participants already know how to operate their cameras.

There would be very little time spent explaining aperture, shutter speed or ISO. Instead, the instructor says, in effect:

“You already know how to take a photograph. Now let’s work on making a better one.”

That makes it much more attractive to experienced photographers.

What Makes This an Intermediate/Advanced Class?

This course does not teach basic camera operation.

Participants should already understand:

  • Aperture
  • Shutter speed
  • ISO
  • Exposure compensation
  • Autofocus
  • Basic composition
  • Basic lens selection

This allows the class to concentrate on the more interesting questions:

Why this photograph?

Why this viewpoint?

Why this lens?

Why this exposure?

Why wait?

Why include that person?

Why exclude that building?

Those are the questions that help photographers progress.

London After the Basics

Advanced City & Street Architecture Photography

Already comfortable with your camera? Ready to take your photography to the next level?

This two-hour practical workshop is designed for intermediate and advanced photographers who already understand the fundamentals of photography and want to develop their creative approach.

Working through London’s spectacular riverside architecture, we will explore composition, perspective, lens choice, light, reflections, geometry, timing and visual storytelling.

Rather than learning what aperture or ISO means, you’ll learn when and why to use the techniques you already know.

You’ll be challenged to stop simply recording London’s architecture and start interpreting it photographically.

From the geometry of More London to the structure of Tower Bridge and the dramatic lines of the Millennium Bridge, we’ll look for unusual viewpoints, strong compositions and opportunities that other photographers might walk straight past.

You’ll work on:

  • Advanced composition
  • Architectural abstraction
  • Lens selection
  • Perspective
  • Geometry
  • Reflections
  • Light and shadow
  • Creative exposure
  • Layering
  • Timing
  • Architecture and people
  • Visual storytelling
  • Creating a coherent photographic series

Suitable for photographers who already understand the manual functions of their camera.

“Old London vs New London” is the central theme. It gives participants a photographic objective rather than simply taking them from one landmark to another, and London’s official Westminster location guidance confirms the unusually broad mix of photographic environments available around the Thames, Trafalgar Square and Westminster.

Find the unusual viewpoint.
Wait for the right person.
Watch the light.
Change your lens.
Simplify the frame.
Tell a visual story.

Stop recording what London looks like. Start deciding how you want it to look.
